WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact
that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important
functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all th e nerves of the
body. Your nervous system controls the function of virtually every cell,
tissue, organ , and system of your body. Just as your brain protects the
delicate tissues of the brain, the spine protects the vulnerable communication
pathways of
the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired in any way,
it can cause malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body.
Doctors call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Chiropractic is the
science of locating these Vertebral Subluxation Complexes and reducing their
impact on the nervous system. This in turn lets your body restore it's own
inborn ability to heal itself and be healthy.
WHAT DO CHIROPRACTORS DO?
Chiropractic is a natural method of health care that does
not use drugs or surgery. It removes the effects of the Vertebral Subluxation
through a method of treatment called a spinal adjustment. In addition to support the
changes made by the spinal adjustment Chiropractors use massage, physiotherapy
(such as
ultrasound, heat and ice), exercise rehabilitation, nutrition and spinal adjustments to
treat their patients. Chiropractic focuses on treating the causes of
physical problems, rather than just the symptoms. With a normally functioning spine and a
healthy lifestyle, your body is better able to heal itself.
WHY IS THE SPINE SO IMPORTANT?
Your spine is designed to support your weight and protect
your spinal cord. The spinal cord is the vital link that connects your brain to the rest
of your body. The spinal cord travels through your spine, which is made up of 24 separate,
moving vertebrae. When these vertebrae become malpositioned, they can put pressure on the
spinal cord and irritate the nervous system. Since the nervous system connects to every
cell in your body, a problem in your spine can cause a problem with any tissue or organ in
your body. This is why Chiropractors try to locate and correct these areas of spinal
dysfunction.
